When we chat about BC Cab, we must chat about grape growing… farming. Cabernet has found its stride here in the Similkameen Valley and to the east, Oliver to Osoyoos. It’s a variety that pushes both our viticultural practices and our climate. From when the vines awake from dormancy and pass through the following plant phases, we’re always quick to prioritize the work done in Cabernet Sauvignon. Getting the shoot count right and only allowing one cluster per shoot, ensures us a light crop load to concentrate both the seasons sun and flavours to the remaining tonnage. Leaf removal along fruit zone, canopy management and multiple passes of ‘green’ thinning are all very labour intensive.

2021 was one of extreme heat in Southern BC, and while some grape varietals ‘shut down’ in these hot temperatures, Cabernet has a heat tolerance to push through. Our commitment to the stony soil on the shoulders of the Similkameen valley is very rewarding, tasting this wine. An epic result of site and experience.

Although still in its youth, the concentration is great and is sure to blossom with another 4-8 years of aging. The ripe profile of this vintage makes this approachable on release, with structure to age.

Tasting Notes
"The Corcelettes Estate Vineyard sits on the Keremeos Upper Bench over a mix of spare, alluvial Stemwinder soils and gravelly sandy loam: the perfect setting for the super warm 2021 vintage that fully ripened this cabernet sauvignon hanging one cluster per shoot. As hot as it got, the cabernet pushed through, and the results were gratifying, including an amazing silky texture at release. Florals mark the opening, followed by dusty mineral, black plums, blackcurrants, and that BC savoury desert brush finish. It's impressive now, but I would wait 5 to 7 years for this issue to reach its peak." -Anthony Gismondi

Vineyard Notes
All of our 2021’s were literally "kissed" by the sun. A vintage expressing a lot of intensity. Two compounding reasons: First, we reached temperatures in early June of 44 degrees. Although this may not be uncommon as of late in a growing season, June is bloom. Reaching these high temperatures in June can cook our blossoms and ‘shatter’ our clusters. This means aborted flowers, which means reduced cluster sizes. The lower yield then had a strong launch for the remainder of the season. This allowed, on average, 2.9 Tons/acre on all our sites. Forget about the reduced crop for a second as this has everything to do with the quality of these wines. All our 2021 reds are gold medal status, 91+ points if you will. The concentration and complexity of these wines are truly jaw dropping.

The wine first strikes me quite mineral, earthy and it weaves into the tannin profile quite elegantly. The glass is filled with pretty aromas of dried flower petals, flint, and dark chocolate. Even the third taste, the palate is so impressive – full yet balanced, cherry chocolate and ripe red berries give it length. Yum. Although still in its youth, the concentration is great and is sure to blossom with another 4-8 years of aging. Cellar 5-10 years. The ripe profile of this vintage makes this approachable on release, with structure to age.
