Tasting Notes
"In year three, Talus remains a product of high-bank alluvial and talus slopes that are the soul of the Corcelettes vineyards. Think of this as a note from the unique Similkameen Valley terroir. Windswept and free of any disease most years, the winery’s signature red in 2021 is a mix of 40% merlot, 35% cabernet sauvignon, 23% cabernet franc, 1% malbec, and 1% petit verdot. Talus is rich in powerful, savoury briary fruit that is as dark as a red wine can be. The tannins are surprisingly supple, but I would say it is slightly drier in the back end than the previous two. However, it is still young and years away from full maturity in the bottle. The finish is marked with bitter dark chocolate, some toast, and plenty of spice, again characteristics that will melt into the wine with time. Twenty barrels were made from select rows, and in some cases, vines on the estate." -Anthony Gismondi, Gismondi On Wine
"Opulent, plummy dark fruits are layered with sappy herbs, graphite, and judicious sweet oak. It's complex and serious, with a firm, extracted structure that suggests this needs another 4-5 years to unwind."- Geoffrey Moss, MW

Vineyard Notes
All of our 2021’s were literally kissed by the sun. A vintage expressing a lot of intensity. Two compounding reasons: First, we reached temperatures in early June of 44 degrees. Although this may not be uncommon as of late in a growing season, June is bloom. Reaching these high temperatures in June can cook our blossoms and ‘shatter’ our clusters. This means aborted flowers, which means reduced cluster sizes. The lower yield then had a strong launch for the remainder of the season. This allowed, on average, 2.9 Tons/acre on all our sites. Forget about the reduced crop for a second as this has everything to do with the quality of these wines. All our 2021 reds are gold medal status, 91+ points if you will. The concentration and complexity of these wines are truly jaw dropping.
Winemaker Notes
"Naturally, this being our flagship wine, people often ask “Charlie how is it made?”. When I tell people that it’s easy, they are always surprised by that answer – “the process starts early in the year. Some rows just seem to bloom a little earlier or we get to particular plant work at the perfect time. Perhaps it’s the perfectly timed irrigation shift or perhaps we skipped one on that block and a light rain passed. Although we try, soil fertility and general vine health is not perfectly homogenous across vineyards – we address what we can but we also take pride in keeping this simple. Perhaps it comes down to the individual(s) that pruned, shoot thinned, tucked or leaf pulled and adjusted crop in those particular rows just right, perhaps it’s a combination of all these things that connect us to our vineyards – this methodology, or selection process, is applied to the dozens of micro blocks we have that are planted to Bordeaux varietals – after making an initial ‘cut’, what if I said that only half of the resulting wines could make the conversation for TALUS? It’s pretty simple in the sense that it’s the result of your very best efforts in all aspects of wine growing, then analytically and sensorially reduce it to the most elegant and generous of our barrel lots. We then trial several blends over several months to capture and balance the very best of the participating varietals. The whole must be larger than the sum of its parts, that is the art of blending. The goal? To share the beauty and potential of our valley and our passion for wine in every glass. The reward? TALUS." -Charlie Baessler
